A quicker, simpler and more cost effective way for schools to secure an identification of dyslexia

Following the Publication of The Rose Report in 2009 "Identifying and Teaching Children and Young People with Dyslexia and Literacy Difficulties", the Worcestershire Dyslexia pathway was developed to build on the underlying principles of assessment over time and the recognition of the wide range of difficulties that a dyslexic learner may experience.

Settings quickly embraced the process that good practice in this area dictates and this good practice has now become embedded in most schools.

We are therefore now able to launch our new more streamlined dyslexia identification assessments which are both more economical to purchase and will deliver results more quickly.

Schools should continue to track and monitor pupils' progress and use the checklist of common characteristics as an initial screening tool.
Collecting background information and evidence remains crucial to the process and if school feel they have gathered enough evidence to suggest Dyslexia they can then request a Dyslexia Assessment. The specialist teacher will then review this evidence along with a formal assessment and after discussion a decision can be made. This reduces the involvement of outside agencies early in the process and the time it may take to reach a decision.

Wednesday 10th October is World Mental Health Day

Growing concerns about children's mental health and research showing the impact on educational outcomes have resulted in emotional health and wellbeing increasingly being recognised in national educational policies and guidance. Schools and their workforce play a crucial role in supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people.

Schools should familiarise themselves with the range of external support available for pupils:

CAMHS
The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) provide support to children and families where the young person is experiencing significant mental health difficulties.

CAMHS CAST
CAST (Consultation, Advice, Support and Training) is a service that sits within Worcestershire CAMHS. CAST offers mental health specific consultation, advice, support and training for professionals who work with children and young people.

It is estimated that approximately 1 in 100 people are on the autism spectrum.
The increasing number of children and young people with autism in all types of educational settings presents challenges to staff at a time when resources are stretched and school leaders face many competing demands.

The National Autism Education Trust (AET) support programme will assist schools to:
  • Improve the quality of the teaching and learning environment and reduce the anxiety levels of pupils on the autism spectrum.
  • Address Ofsted's concerns regarding vulnerable learners
  • Narrow and close the gap between the attainment of learners on the autism spectrum and their peers.
