February 2017

Dear

The Northumberland Coast has been shortlisted for the Holiday Destination of the Year in the 2017 Countryfile magazine awards. Two landmarks along our stunning coastline are also in the running for awards: Embleton Bay, with its view towards Dunstanburgh Castle, is a contender for Beach of the Year, whilst the Farne Islands could be awarded Nature Reserve of the Year.

It's good that the Northumberland Coast has been recognised in this way. An increase in demand is great for the local economy. But it brings with it the conflict we face in our role of conserving and enhancing the AONB: promoting the area without damaging what people come for in the first place. I'm reminded of the Joni Mitchell song 'Big Yellow Taxi', which sums up the conflict perfectly:

"Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot"

Yet at the same time I'm pleased that we are seeing improvements taking place in some of the car parks in the coastal villages to reduce pressures on residents.

Don't forget, by the way, to register your vote before the end of February.

Iain Robson, access and natural environment officer for the AONB Partnership, said: "It is brilliant for the Northumberland coast to be recognised in this way for its outstanding natural beauty, wildlife, walking, and historic environment. People have woken up to the fact that the coast is such a beautiful place, partly by word of mouth and social media".

Voting closes before midnight on February 28th and the winners will be announced in mid-March. Visit countryfile.com/awards to cast your vote.

Good Citizens of Bamburgh

A Bamburgh youngster and her friends carried out a beach clean recently.

Isla Morton, who has just turned 12 and organised the event as part of her community citizenship project at St Mary's Middle School, Belford, said: "We wanted to clean a beach because rubbish on the beach doesn't look good for visitors coming to our area and can be harmful to birds and other wildlife."
