Leeds Social Sciences Institute Newsletter

Hello

The start of 2018 has seen a number of personnel changes within the Leeds Social Sciences Institute (LSSI).

We are very sad to announce the departure of LSSI Co-ordinator, Sophia Kennedy, who has now moved to another role within the University after 9 years dedicated work within the team. Tremendous thanks are extended to Sophia for all her work and dedication over the years to supporting the social sciences.

We welcome Hannah Crow from Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research as the new LSSI Co-ordinator.

We would also like to thank Professor Jenny Tomlinson for her excellent contribution to LSSI as Deputy Director since 2015. Jenny has now stepped down from the LSSI Executive and is now on maternity leave. We welcome two new Deputy Directors in Professor Karen Lucas (Institute for Transport Studies) and Professor Adrian Favell (Sociology and Social Policy).

We are extremely pleased to have this level and quality of research leadership in support of LSSI as it advances the role of the social sciences and the LSSI Strategy both across the university and in our engagement with our partner and the external research challenges ahead.

In addition, Helen Forsyth has been covering the role of LSSI Support Assistant since September 2017.

In the coming months we are hoping to appoint to three other support roles:

• Research and Innovation Development Manager (Grade 8);
• Communications and Graduate Co-ordinator (Grade 6);
• Industrial Strategy Partnership Manager (Grade 7 fixed-term until end March 2019, funded by ESRC, see below)

ESRC Additional Funding

ESRC International Development NGO Data

We are pleased to announce that LSSI has recently secured additional GCRF funding from the ESRC focused on NGO data as a top-up to our Impact Acceleration account (IAA) for the Social Sciences. Funding is available to support social science researchers to explore the NGO Data IAA objectives, which include:

• Building relationships with NGOs; and
• Increasing the impact potential of NGO Data sources

Successful grants will normally be under £10k each, but the panel will consider applications for up to £15k where a strong justification of resources is made.

Applications should be made on the application form and returned to Hannah Crow by no later than 5pm on Friday 30th March 2018.

For further information, see the ODA definitions and guidelines.

ESRC IAA Business Boost Fund (Industrial Strategy)

The LSSI has recently been successful in securing an additional top up award of £100k from the ESRC to support the IAA and DTP to focus on the Industrial Strategy.

The additional Business Boost Fund is to enable us to respond to future Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund where industry partners must be involved. The investment also has a broader purpose, which is to increase awareness and engagement of students with business, and recognise value and role of social science in the Industrial Strategy.

The LSSI will working in collaboration with the ESRC funded White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership (WRSSDTP) to take forward this award, this is a collaboration across the social sciences at Leeds, Sheffield, York, Bradford, Sheffield Hallam, Hull, and Manchester Metropolitan Universities.

The LSSI will appoint an Industrial Strategy Partnerships Manager, responsible for the development and management of Industrial and Business partnerships across the White Rose DTP, working with colleagues to find industrial partners and developing and nurturing those relationships and identifying a pipeline of potential eligible projects within the University.

Impact Acceleration Account call for proposals

We are pleased to announce the twelfth call for proposals as part of the IAA for the Social Sciences, in association with the ESRC. The fund has supported over 45 impact related projects across the social sciences, some of which are showcased in a new LSSI IAA brochure, and has secured funding until at least end March 2019.

Applications are invited across the following three strands of activity:

• Responsive mode impact funding;
• Knowledge exchange fellowships; and
• PhD research placements

Applications should be submitted to Hannah Crow by 12pm on Wednesday 11th April.

Please visit the LSSI website for more information on IAA and how to apply.

Translating Excellent Research Impact in the Social Sciences into a REF 2021 Impact Case Study

This event, held on 18th January, was hosted by LSSI in collaboration with the LUBS 'Research with Impact' Seminar Series. It was attended by staff across the social sciences at Leeds who discussed the translation of excellent research impact into a REF impact case study across Units of Assessment in the social sciences.

It provided participants with an opportunity to hear from ex-panel members and impact case study authors from REF 2014 about their insights and experiences assessing impact in REF 2014.

Further details, including the notes and presentations from the event can be found on the LSSI website.

LSSI Impact Acceleration Account Showcase event report

On 21st February, LSSI hosted a successful event celebrating the successes of projects supported by the IAA. The event was held in the Great Hall at the University of Leeds and was followed by informal networking.

Following a welcome by Professor Lisa Roberts, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation and an introduction by Professor Jeremy Higham, Dean for Education, Social Sciences and Law, an Impact Showcase featured presentations on three completed IAA funded projects from:

• Professor Andy Gouldson, Earth and Environment and Tom Knowland, Leeds City Council – Leeds Climate Commission
• Dr Hayley Davies, Sociology and Social Policy - Creating Impact through Animations with Safeguarding Messages for Children
• Professor Cristina Leston-Bandeira, POLIS and Kate Anderson, Houses of Parliament Petitions Committee – The Petitions Committee

A series of breakout workshops then focused on four different aspects of impact: international collaborations; co-production and partnership working; sharing best practice of developing impactful research collaborations; and creating impact through PGR placements.

Further details about this event, including a link to the presentations, notes, photographs and videos will shortly be uploaded to the LSSI website news section.
