Welcome to May's newsletter
We have another busy month ahead of us. We are also delighted to announce that the Local Plan has been adopted. This is a crucial document which will help us meet the challenges of a growing population and manage the housing required in a sustainable way. It will also help provide the supporting infrastructure such as affordable homes, roads and schools to ensure future generations have access to great places to live and work. Thank you to everyone who shared their views, through consultations, to help reach this important milestone.

Join May Day fun
Families are invited to join the May Day fun - with magic, balloons, circus skills, puppet shows, face painting, crafting, maypole and food, on The Square in Market Harborough on Saturday 4 May 2019 from 10am to 4pm.
Are you ready for an emergency - yes or no?
Have you ever wondered how your business or organisation would cope in an emergency?

How would you deal with losing staff in numbers due to flu, a cyber attack, prolonged loss of electricity, severe weather or a natural disaster?

We can help - and during Business Continuity Awareness Week running from 13-17 May 2019 we want people to know we can help you plan for an emergency to ensure you're ready for that 'worst case scenario'.

Your thoughts needed on plan for centre
Following on from February's event in Waitrose, the second roadshow event to hear about progress of the Lutterworth Town Centre Masterplan is Saturday 11 May 2019 from 11am-4pm at the Wycliffe Rooms in George Street, Lutterworth.

We are keen to hear the thoughts and ideas of residents and businesses about Lutterworth's strengths and weaknesses to feed into a draft masterplan and vision being produced later this year to help boost the economic vibrancy of Lutterworth town centre.

'Respect and tolerate' during lighter nights
With the lighter nights here residents are being encouraged to 'respect and tolerate' others to help combat anti-social behaviour.

Harborough Community Safety Partnership, which includes the Council, is encouraging people to think about whether a party or barbecue might be a 'one-off' and what constitutes anti-social behaviour and how, and when, to report it.

Young people are also being encouraged to get involved in more planned activities.

Major milestone for Local Plan

The Local Plan – a key document which will ensure the growing population and future generations in the Harborough district have access to great places to live and work – has been adopted.

The major milestone was reached after councillors approved the Local Plan at a meeting of Harborough District Council on 30 April 2019.

The adopted Local Plan will direct development across the district, supported by the appropriate infrastructure. It will also enable the Council to refuse development that is not in accordance with the Plan.

Join in next year's comedy event

We're encouraging pubs, cafés, businesses or any other venues in the Harborough district to find out more about next year's BIG Weekend of comedy.

Following the success of this year's event, held in February and organised by Harborough District Council as part of the Leicester Comedy Festival, we want more venues to take part next year.

Pop along to the Angel Hotel in Market Harborough on Wednesday 15 May 2019 from 7pm to 9pm to find how local venues can take part. There is no minimum size of venue - comedy acts can be staged practically anywhere!

A host of big-name comedians (pictured) descended on the district in February with a number of local venues benefiting from sell-out shows. The event also went on to win a Liberty Award at the Leicester Comedy Festival Awards.

Email business@harborough.gov.uk if you'd like to come along.

Help us celebrate lottery birthday

We need you to help us celebrate one year of the hugely successful Harborough District Community Lottery at The Symington Building on Wednesday 12 June, 6pm – 8pm.

It's been a really successful year, since Harborough District Council launched in May 2018 with Lottery operator Gatherwell, as an innovative way to help good causes in the district boost their coffers.

One year on – we want to celebrate this success, and say thank you to everyone involved so far, by holding a special birthday event and inviting all the Lotto good causes to come along – plus any not-for-profit organisation interested in signing up as a good cause.
We'll also be giving away a big cash prize on the night!

Let us know if you are coming along to our birthday celebration at lottery@harborough.gov.uk

Resilience Officer - a day in the life

I am a Resilience Officer for Harborough District Council and I provide emergency planning support to the Council and support residents, communities and businesses in the aftermath of incidents. This involves preparing for, responding to and recovering from incidents which includes but is not limited to flooding, terrorism or transport accidents. I am going to demonstrate two alternative days in the life perspectives: when an incident has occurred versus what we term 'peacetime'.

As part of my job I work collaboratively with colleagues in other local authorities and organisations across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Therefore, as of 28 October 2018 for approximately one week I was tasked with responding to the helicopter accident that had occurred in Leicester City.

Town's classic car show revs up

You'll see the most amazing retro cars, motorcycles, scooters and commercial vehicles from across the country as Market Harborough's Classic Car Show returns on Sunday 7 July 2019 from 10am to 4pm.

Due to overwhelming response, registrations to exhibit vehicles are now closed as we have reached capacity.

Last year's event saw over 20,000 people descend on the town for the occasion and local businesses and shops are encouraged to open on the day and decorate their premises with fabric bunting.
