Councillor Phil King
Leader of the Council

Welcome to August's Council newsletter
We have another busy month ahead starting with the launch of our parking
survey.

Having excellent car parking facilities is crucial in terms of supporting businesses and the local economy, as well as to maintain safety and ensure car parks continue to meet the needs of shoppers, visitors and residents.

We're looking to improve some of our car parks over the coming years, adding to recent improvements such as introducing electric vehicle charging points, cashless payments, and more pop and shop bays. Paying by phone and new coach parking are also on the way. I hope you share your views; we value your feedback.

I am looking forward to a number of exciting events coming up over the next month and hope people come along to support these.

Keeping kids busy during the holidays
With the school summer holiday in full swing there are lots of things to do and places to visit - plus a host of activity sessions across the Harborough district.

Here are some useful links:
Have your say on our parking services

We are inviting you to tell us what you think of our car parks, parking services and how we can improve what we provide across the Harborough district.

In recent years we have made some changes to our car parks and how we operate. We would like to get some feedback on what you think about these changes.

Your views will be considered as part of the overall development of the future of our parking service.

We want to hear from you if you are a resident, a business, a worker, shopper or a visitor.

Whatever your reason for using our car parks, we would like to know what you think.

Your feedback is important to us.

Enjoy flavours of our food and drink event
It's back! Our award-winning Food and Drink Festival returns to Welland Park in Market Harborough celebrating the best local, regional, national and International cuisine – plus star chefs!

The free-to-attend event takes place on Saturday 3 August and Sunday 4 August 2019 from 11am to 7pm – with stalls featuring everything from bread, cheese, meats and gourmet cakes to Mexican street food, spicy curries, flame grilled chicken and authentic Sicilian cannoli.

This year, keen home cooks can pick up inspiration from BBC Chef Stephanie Moon and renowned Italian cook Carmela Hayes on Saturday, with Stephanie Moon returning alongside award winning TV chef and restaurateur Aldo Zilli on Sunday – with hourly, live cookery demonstrations at the festival between 11.30am and 3.30pm each day.

Chance to pitch idea in 'Dragon's Den'
image.

Are you looking for funding to help get your project off the ground? If so, the next Dragon's Den style event could help you.

The Council-run event - an informal version of the BBC TV programme - invites local groups and individuals to submit projects with some invited to pitch their idea to a panel of funders.

In return, they'll get specific advice from the panel about potential funding, key criteria, and help secure successful grant applications.

It will take place at The Symington Building in Market Harborough on Thursday 19 September 2019 from 9:30am to 4pm.

Places are limited but email details of your project proposal to grants@harborough.gov.uk
Blitz on flytippers - tell us if you see it
We want Harborough district to be a 'no-go zone' for flytippers - but we need your help!

We want to make it easy for you to share information if you see flytipping or if you witness it happening. We can then remove it and investigate.

Illegally dumped rubbish is a blight on our district and most of the flytipping that is reported to us is household waste which can be taken to the tip for free.

Everyone has a legal responsibility for the waste produced on their property and to ensure this rubbish is disposed of properly.

Don't get caught out. Use a licensed waste carrier to remove your waste (you can also check if someone has a licence on the Environment Agency website. You can also use our excellent trade waste service.

Celebrating country life at agricultural show
Get set to celebrate country life as Leicestershire County Show returns to the district.

The popular event celebrates rural life with livestock and equine classes and a range of family-friendly entertainment.

It's held at the Showground just outside of Market Harborough, next to the Airfield Business Park.

It takes place on Saturday 24 August and Sunday 25 August 2019.

New litter bins for Broughton Astley
New litter bins have been installed across the village of Broughton Astley.

We have installed new, bigger bins in the centre of the village and wider estates as part of a replacement programme.

This follows new litter bins being installed in Lutterworth last year.

Harnessing sense of community

Have you ever wanted to get more involved with a local community group or good cause but didn't know how to do it?

Following the success of last year's Community and Volunteers Fair, the 2019 fair will once again bring together charities, local groups, sports clubs and organisations to showcase their work and start conversations.

The event, run by the Council in partnership with Neil O'Brien, MP for Harborough, will take place in the Square in Market Harborough on Saturday 17 August 2019, from 10am to 4pm.

Day in the Life...Environmental Health Officer

As part of our continuing series of 'Day in the Life...' features this month we'll be focusing on an Environmental Health Officer.

This is a job where no two days are the same with an officer tasked with anything from food hygiene inspections at any place which sells or serves food and drink, but also reacting to concerns, requests or complaints from the public about such issues as noise or other kinds of 'pollution'.

Their work mainly focuses on food safety and workplace health and safety.

Revamped play area set to re-open soon
image.

The Mulberry Close play area in Lutterworth, which is being enhanced and updated as part of a programme of Council play area improvements across the district, will re-open soon.

Ageing equipment is being replaced and new, inclusive equipment is being added, along with new surfacing.

The play area is closed while the work takes place but is due to re-open in August before the end of the school holidays.

Fleckney latest village to consult on its plan
Did you know we have 21 adopted neighbourhood plans in the Harborough district – and Fleckney is the latest village consulting on its proposals.

Neighbourhood planning is a way for communities to help decide the future of the places where they live and work.  After submission, independent examination and agreement by the Council, a referendum is held and villagers go to the polls to decide whether to say 'yes' or 'no' to their neighbourhood plan.

In 2014, Harborough District Council made history when Broughton Astley became the first village in the East Midlands to have its neighbourhood plan adopted. Since then, a further 21 villages in the Harborough district have had their neighbourhood plans adopted thanks to support from the district council.

Fleckney's proposed neighbourhood plan has been submitted for public consultation; you can comment on it at www.harborough.gov.uk/haveyoursay

Register to vote  - return your form
Your vote matters - and it's time to make sure you're registered to vote.

All households in the district will be receiving a Household Enquiry Form which includes the names of the people who are registered to vote at that property. If it is blank it means no-one is registered at the property.

By Law, each year the Council is required to send a form to all households to check that the information it holds on the Electoral Register is correct.

If you're not already done so, please return the form by 9 August 2019 - you are legally required to do so.

If you're not registered you can't vote - and it could affect your credit rating. You could also face a £1,000 fine.

In the event of severe weather – whether it is heavy rain, strong winds, snow or, as in recent days, high temperatures our website has up to date information to help.

Our weather page has the latest Met Office weather warnings as well as advice on how to be prepared for severe weather and useful contacts.

The recent hot temperatures have reminded us that we should look out for neighbours, family and friends and provide whatever support we can for older people, who can be particularly susceptible to heat-related illness.
