Councillor Phil King
Leader of Harborough District Council

Welcome to September's newsletter
This month finds great opportunities to celebrate the achievements of our District by nominating sporting heroes and growing businesses for awards.

There's a fantastic, innovative dementia project launching in Lutterworth as a result of grant funding and an opportunity for local groups and individuals to pitch to experts in the 'Dragon's Den'. Organised by the Council, previous Dragon's Den style events have proved very successful, leading to a number of local projects obtaining funding. It's exciting to see what new projects will flourish from this.

Also; remember to have your say about the future of Market Harborough town centre at the Roadshow Exhibition on 14 September.

Innovative dementia project in Lutterworth

A unique project encouraging people with dementia to re-learn skills in a relaxed and friendly environment has taken a major step forward thanks to a funding boost.

Harborough District Council is working with Lutterworth Share and Care, Northampton University, Gazeley and Lutterworth College on the project which provides a 'classroom' environment for people with dementia to re-learn skills, as a group, to help improve memory and reduce the decline in mental capacity associated with the disease.

It is believed the project is one of the first of its kind in the UK having been trialled in Europe.

Harborough District Council has allocated £58,000 to help develop facilities at the Estates House at Lutterworth College to provide an accessible venue for the project.

Funding has been allocated from Section 106 money provided by developers for community projects and social infrastructure in locations where development has taken place.

People are invited to submit grant applications during the next round of funding; details will be made available on the council's website at www.harborough.gov.uk/grants

Merchant Navy Day
3rd September marks the anniversary of the outbreak of World War 2. Did you know it also marks the first major British maritime casualty?

Just a few hours after hostilities were declared in 1939, the merchant ship SS Athenia was torpedoed with a loss of more than 110 passengers and crew.

Although many hundreds of merchant ships and seafarers would meet the same fate in the years to come, 3 September is now enshrined as Merchant Navy Day in honour of the brave men and women who kept our island nation afloat during both World Wars. Who, even during peacetime face - and continue to face - the perils of mountainous waves and stormy seas

These days by volume, 95% of our trade comes by sea, and the Merchant Navy continues to be a vital part of our economic future.

To show our support, Harborough District Council will be flying the Red Ensign flag outside The Symington Building on Merchant Navy Day, 3 September.
