SUSSEX ROUTE: MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
Introduction
Welcome to the May newsletter for the Sussex route at Network Rail.

Our teams continue to work at home where possible. Of course many roles in the industry are front-line and roles are not able to be undertaken remotely.

Our signalling staff and teams, track workers and maintenance departments continue to work around the clock to keep the country moving.

Because of the nature of some of our work on sites, it will not always be possible for colleagues to maintain a two-metre distance from each other as recommended for social distancing. Please rest assured we are doing our very best to minimise these circumstances, adapt our work practices and where there are no other options we are working to provide the best possible protection we can.

Coronavirus & Network Rail
As the country enters the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to update you on how Network Rail will continue to play its part in supporting the national response.

Keeping our frontline staff, passengers and the public safe is our first priority, and we have been working closely with Government, public health authorities, colleagues across the rail industry and the trades unions since the beginning of the outbreak to put the right guidance and protection in place.

Gatwick Airport Station Transformation begins despite Covid-19

The next stage of the £150 million Gatwick Airport station upgrade will begin next week thanks to Costain working in innovative ways within Covid-19 social distancing safeguards.

Platform 7 will close on Sunday, 17 May 2020 to enable construction of the new station concourse to begin, while other platforms remain open.

The project will relieve overcrowding, improve accessibility and reduce delays for millions of passengers every year. When the upgraded station opens in 2023, there will be wider platforms and improved step-free access, five new lifts and eight new escalators. Works will double the concourse area, which will make journeys from the train to the plane much easier.

Supporting the Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme (CARS)

With the second round of public consultation on the Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme due to begin on Monday, 1 June 2020, the team have taken innovative steps to ensure the consultation is accessible to all passengers and members of the public along the Brighton Main Line.

A live chat facility and a dedicated consultation hotline will be implemented in a bid to replicate the experience of face-to-face public exhibition events, which have been postponed due to COVID-19. Information will be available online and via post to those without internet connectivity.

The consultation period has also been extended to 20 September 2020 to allow ample opportunity for feedback on the scheme to remove the notorious bottleneck in Croydon which is often responsible for delays across the network. Business briefings are also underway and will continue over the coming weeks, providing stakeholders with an opportunity to preview the consultation materials.

The scheme, which will provide the additional capacity required to cater to growing demand on the Brighton Main Line, remains unfunded. You can support the scheme by responding to the consultation from 1 June and sharing news of the consultation with your networks. For more information, please visit the CARS website.

Super-mural in railway arch

We teamed up with street artist Lionel Stanhope to pay tribute to our NHS heroes with a mural in a railway arch in Southwark.

The artwork on Cornwall Road sits underneath Waterloo East railway station, round the corner from St Thomas' Hospital.

Trespass warning from our rail crime teams

Just last week, two serious trespass incidents occurred in Kent. The most shocking incident at Whitehall Lane level crossing near Canterbury, saw two young girls and two men walk through a gate past a red light and run across in front of an oncoming train. The group left the railway a matter of seconds before the Southeastern, Margate - St Pancras train passed them.

In the other incident, a group of dirt bikers cut the padlocks off a locked and bolted level crossing at Shornemead, near Gravesend, to access private property. The crossing is kept locked with only authorised users having keys.

Although across the Kent and Sussex routes, which also covers South London, trespass is down 31% year year to date, and vandalism is down 55% year to date, we are keen to reiterate the seriousness of trespassing on the railway which can have serious consequences for all involved. Read more here.
