Celebrating the green and pleasant Harborough district
I am sure, like me, you're enjoying the fact the weather is getting warmer and the sun is shining more.
Spring is here and it's a great opportunity to get out and about and see more of what we have to offer across our fantastic district.

I am delighted that we have launched our latest video showcasing all that the district has to offer and the many unique and exciting tourism attractions we have here.

Do take a couple of minutes to watch it; you may see some familiar faces from local shops, eateries and businesses.

We have lots coming up over the coming month; we have our Jobs Week, which proved a real success last year. Our school roadshows are also continuing to engage with young people with a view to reducing anti-social behaviour and encouraging safety.

Finally, I would like to thank all the businesses who helped make our 'Go Green' convention at the Grow-on Centre so successful. It was very encouraging to see so many people committed to reducing their carbon footprint and making the district a cleaner and greener place to be.

Job seekers are set for the return of a week-long initiative offering advice on careers, employment and training.

Harborough District Council's inaugural Jobs Week, last year, run in partnership with the Job Centre Plus and the National Careers Service, proved very popular and it is now set to return from Friday 1 April to Friday 8 April 2022.

Across the week, there will be face-to-face and virtual events to help people find employment, improve skills, or find new opportunities – whether you are in work or not.

The week will begin with the monthly Job Club at the Wycliffe Rooms in Lutterworth on Friday 1 April from 12:30pm-4pm, and there will be a Job Fair on Wednesday 6 April 2022 at The Symington Building in Market Harborough where people can speak directly with employers about what roles are available.

Now the weather is getting better - there is still time to sign up to have your garden waste collected by the Council every fortnight. It's easy and efficient and a perfect way to dispose of your garden cuttings.

The popular garden waste collections run every fortnight during the spring, summer and autumn months, with a one-off Christmas tree collection for subscribers in January.

The green wheeled bin can be used to dispose of loose green waste, grass cutting, leaves, flowers, weeds, clippings, twigs, small branches without the need for residents to take these items to the tip.

The subscription charge will be £55 per year per bin.

Going 'green' was the aim of an innovative event that saw over 30 local businesses join together with the combined intention of tackling climate change and being more environmentally-friendly.

At a packed-out Harborough Grow-on Centre, businesses from across the district took part in the Harborough Go Green convention, organised by Harborough District Council, to help develop climate-friendly ideas and reduce carbon emissions. It was one of the first events of its kind to be organised by a local authority.

Attendees heard from a series of speakers on the day, took part in interactive sessions, and put questions to climate change experts.

The day also included the launch of an exciting opportunity for local businesses, with Harborough District Council being the first district council in the country to support businesses in accessing the Zellar online sustainability platform. The District Council is sponsoring access for up to 40 local businesses to join Zellar's sustainability platform, for free for one year, which will help, support businesses to go greener and work towards Net Zero in a structured way. For further details, please contact: business@harborough.gov.uk

Cllr Phil King, Leader of the Council, launched the event, which included a keynote speech from Harborough MP and Levelling-up Minister Neil O'Brien who talked about the Government policies which are helping businesses go green.

School visits aim to promote safety and prevent anti-social behaviour

We've been visiting schools talking to young people and listening to their concerns about keeping safe and anti-social behaviour.

Other community safety agencies have joined us on our roadshows at secondary schools which are aiming to promote safety and reduce problematic behaviour in the district.

The roadshows are raising awareness of the dangers and vulnerabilities related to excess alcohol and substance misuse, highlighting alternative activities available, providing information and safety demonstrations, to help young people keep themselves, and their friends, safe.

Get £150 towards your energy bills quicker by signing up to direct debit

Residents in the Harborough district are being urged to pay their council tax by direct debit to help speed up the payment of a £150 rebate to homes in bands A to D for help towards energy bills.

This comes after the Government announced the council tax rebate scheme to support families amid rising global energy costs.

This will be a one-off payment, made on behalf of central Government, by local authorities, direct to eligible households.

Households that pay council tax by direct debit, which is a safe, simple and quick way to pay, will see the cash go directly into their bank accounts. Those who do not pay by direct debit will be contacted by the Council and invited to make a claim.

Nearly quarter of a million pounds is being shared to help local projects benefiting residents across the Harborough district.

The Council will allocate the funding to a number of projects – all benefiting from Section 106 money, provided by developers for community and social infrastructure where new housing has been built.

View the full list of grant allocations here.

Councillor Simon Whelband, Harborough District Council's Cabinet member for communities, said: "This is a huge amount of funding which we are absolutely delighted to be able to allocate to some excellent and much-needed projects across the district where new development has taken place. These grants will benefit residents and communities for many years to come."
