Summer has arrived with much to look forward to |
Following on from last month's glorious Platinum Jubilee celebrations, both nationally and locally, we have much to look forward to over the coming month.
Market Harborough's popular classic car show, taking place on Sunday 10 July, is a really fun occasion for all the family and, if previous years are anything to go by, it will be one to remember. It always attracts people from far and wide, which is great for showcasing all that the district has to offer and for local businesses, eateries and hospitality.
I am also pleased to be able to report back that, over the last five years, there has been much-needed investment in community infrastructure created in areas where new homes have been built. New homes are needed, and we we continue to work hard to negotiate with developers to ensure that the required investments in community buildings, and other vital infrastructure, take place.
Finally, as we approach Thank You Day on 4 July (the birthday of the NHS), I would like to thank all those who work in healthcare and our emergency and public services who provide such vital support and care.
Equally as important, I'd like to thank all the volunteers who support these people in their day-to-day activities. Your service is appreciated by everyone across the Harborough district. Thank you.

Eco-friendly event heads back to town |
Eco-friendly event Holistic Harborough is set to return to The Square in Market Harborough on Saturday 2 July 2022.
The event is designed to showcase some fantastic vegan and vegetarian foods, fairtrade products, eco cleaning products, soaps, bath bombs, and an array of wellbeing and fitness practitioners.

Multi-million pound infrastructure gain for communities in district |

Nearly £30million has been secured, in the last five years, to help fund vital community facilities and infrastructure across the Harborough district. Harborough District Council has helped secure investment from developers – through Section 106 agreements – to create health, homes, and leisure opportunities in areas where houses have been built. The contributions have provided money to improve play areas, sporting facilities, village halls, as well as to provide affordable homes for those struggling to buy or rent a home on the open market. This will also provide new and improved community facilities, upgraded open spaces, health facilities, police contributions, and Lutterworth Museum in the future. Since 2017, the total provided from developer contributions for community facilities in the district is approximately £16million. That includes £5.5m of developer contributions to benefit Lutterworth and Broughton Astley, £7.3m of contributions for the middle of the district – which includes Fleckney, Husbands Bosworth, Lubenham, Foxton, Market Harborough, Great Bowden and the Langtons, and £3.2m of contributions for the east of the district – which includes Scraptoft, Great Glen and the Kibworths. An additional £12million has been ploughed into education through developer contributions, agreed by Leicestershire County Council, as a result of new homes locally, as well as further funding for travel, highways, household waste and recycling sites, and libraries. Celebrate the summer months safely and be considerate of others |

As the warmer weather arrives, we're asking residents to be considerate, and think about safety and security during our 'Safer Summer' campaign.
Our messages have been split into Home and Away – 'respect and tolerance' messages around anti-social behaviour, fire safety and noise levels when at home, and looking at safety when going away on holiday, from avoiding scams when booking holidays to keeping your home safe whilst away.
There'll also be Safer Summer days on 27 July at Welland Park and 3 August at Coventry Road Recreation Ground in Lutterworth, with partners available for residents to chat to. And diversionary activities for young people across the district.

All set for return of classic car show - and still time to enter a vehicle |

More than 230 vintage vehicles have already registered for the Market Harborough Classic Car Show taking place on Sunday 10 July 2022 between 10am and 4pm. This year the occasion is being organised by local events company Harborough Live Events in partnership with the Council. In previous years, streets have been lined with classic vehicles including High Street, The Square, Abbey Street, and Adam and Eve Street in the town centre. There will also be food stalls, and prizes up for grabs for anyone who enters a vehicle. Read full details, and how to register a vehicle, here. |

Drop in at sports centre for coffee and get support with anxiety |

A new Crisis Café is launching in Lutterworth in July offering support for people who need immediate help with their mental health. The café is a drop-in centre for anyone, over the age of 18 years old, who is feeling lonely, anxious, or are finding it hard to manage difficult feelings - no appointment needed. It is located at The Wellbeing Hub, Lutterworth Sports Centre in Coventry Road, Lutterworth, LE17 4RB, and will be open from Wednesday 6 July, and every Wednesday, from 5pm – 9pm, and Friday, from 9am – 1pm. It is one of 11 new Crisis Cafés opening across the county, and follows the opening, last September, of a Crisis Café at The Symington Building in Market Harborough, held on Wednesdays. The cafes are funded by the NHS and are supported by other partners, including the local authorities. Jacky Waring from community interest company Beacon Care and Advice, said: "Beacon is delighted to be running the twice weekly sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays which will allow members of the community to access support and advice to manage their mental health and wellbeing." More electric vehicle charge points here for homes without driveways |

If you already own an electric vehicle - or are thinking of getting one - there's good news as more charge-up points have been installed in the Harborough district to meet demand. Ten more electric vehicle charging points, with associated bays, are now ready to use, in Doddridge Road, St Mary's West, and Angel Street car parks in Market Harborough – all chosen as they are a short distance from homes without off-street parking. The charge points have been installed, in partnership with EB Charging, after Harborough District Council was successful in securing Government funding to assist residents without off-street parking. Go plastic free for a month and make a difference to planet |

How much do you rely on single-use plastic, and could you go completely plastic free for a month - or maybe longer? Plastic Free July is a global campaign which focuses on plastic pollution and the reduction of single-use plastic so we can all enjoy a cleaner and greener environment. There are many easy ways you can reduce single-use plastic such as using reusable water bottles and shopping bags, preparing lunchboxes without plastic wrap, recycling fabrics and supporting local markets, butchers, bakers, and fishmongers to avoid pre-packed goods. In July 2019, Harborough District Council declared a Climate Emergency. In 2020/21, Harborough district generated nearly 40,000 tonnes of household waste, which equates to 425kg per household. In all, 21,287.3 tonnes of residual (black bin) waste was not composted, reused or recycled and was mainly sent to landfill. We want to reduce this figure and help people make informed choices about how we can all tackle the climate crisis by making small changes. Love Parks Week is is running from 29 July to 5 August 2022 and we're lucky that Harborough district is home to some beautiful parks and open spaces. We have a small team of experts, and volunteers, who do an excellent job of keeping our parks clean, safe and diversified. Have you seen the new wildflower area at Lutterworth Country Park or the new wildflowers at the entrance to Welland Park, by the river ( pictured)? These areas contain over 25 different native species of wildflower and have been planted to attract and support pollinator wildlife. Perhaps you've seen the 40 new trees planted recently at Burford Green in Market Harborough or do your children have a special duck feeding spot or secret tree they like to climb? Maybe your dog has a preferred park too! We'd love to see your photographs of your favourite outdoor spaces across Harborough district to celebrate Love Parks Week. New building control partnership launched offering excellent service |

A brand-new Building Control service merging councils across Leicestershire has officially launched. Harborough District Council will be working alongside the Building Control teams from Blaby District Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Melton Borough Council, Oadby and Wigston Borough Council and Rutland County Council. Leicestershire Building Control Partnership (LBCP) will offer Building Control services for residents across Leicestershire and Rutland on their own dedicated website, giving residents a tailored experience and specialised help all from one point of contact. If you're looking for advice on a building regulations application or would like to book a site inspection, LBCP is the place to go.
