CPEP's First Newsletter!

Welcome to the first of The Clinical Placement Expansion Programme's  (CPEP) bi-monthly newsletter.

This newsletter will provide you with up-to-date information on our projects and we will share the experiences of the primary and social care services we are working with. Firstly though, let us explain what CPEP is and what we do...

The CPEP is a 2-year funded programme and our aim is to support Devon's primary and social care providers to host nursing and allied health professionals (occupational therapy, physio, paramedic, dietetic etc.) students.

We believe that our future clinical workforce would develop into more rounded practitioners if they had an immersive experience in your services and settings. It benefits your teams as it promotes inter-professional learning; learning from and with each other.

It is our job to support you to tweak your processes to be in the best position to host students. Take a look at our FAQ and webpage to find out more.

Primary Care

The CPEP team is working with more than half of GP practices across Devon and they are either already Approved Placement Providers or are working towards this.

We have had some really successful nursing student placements and currently have a Dietetic student on placement within one of our practices. We have been able to tailor the approach for each practice, with some choosing to share students between practices or within PCNs, ensuring practices are in control of what support they are able to provide to students.

Social Care
The CPEP team is working with approximately 30 of Devon's nursing homes. Our work involves supporting homes to become Approved Placement Providers ready to host nursing and Allied Health Professional students. This has the potential to yield an additional 480 placement weeks (1 student averages 4-week placement).

We will support providers every step of the way!

We have successfully placed student Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists in nursing home placements and the feedback has been very positive for both students and providers.

Collaborative Supervision Model

For 12 weeks in 2022, Headway, a charity based in mid-Devon specialising in rehabilitation of adults with brain injuries, facilitated a placement for two third year Occupational Therapy students from The University of Plymouth. The Long Arm Supervision Model (LAS) was implemented allowing for collaboration between students, the placement provider and University. This model empowers student's decision making skills and develops their confidence to practice autonomously. As a non-traditional setting, with no registered workforce on site, Headway noted that the relationship with the LAS was critical to a successful placement. Headway deemed the students to be 'incredible assets' and advises other settings to reap the benefits of student placements.

Could your service benefit from hosting nursing, OT, physio, dietetic, paramedic or music therapy students?

  • An Occupational Therapy student could work with your team to assess and plan for individuals to maintain daily living skills and develop therapeutic activities
  • Dietetic student could work with an individual to increase their nutritional intake and support the review of menu plans
  • Physiotherapy student could assist with falls risk assessments and support individuals/groups with movement programmes
  • Nursing / Return to Practice student could assist registered nurses with all nursing duties
  • Paramedic student could support the further development of emergency hospital admission procedures
  • Music Therapy student could support people through emotional challenges on a 1-1 basis or in small groups, by listening to music and playing instruments

This is a great opportunity for you to showcase your fantastic service, demonstrate personalised care in practice and enable students to learn from and with your team! Please email shs.devon.cpep@nhs.net for more information.
