Welcome to October's issue of GHWY's Care to Go Higher newsletter. 

We are pleased to announce the launch of our collaborative Care Leaver Covenant for 2022-23. Read about some of its new features below, which are designed to make it even more informative and user friendly. It will be supported by a social media camaign during National Care Leavers' Week, so please do like and share our content, and follow the hashtag #NCLW22.

In this issue you can also read about the importance of Open Days and support that is available to care-experienced young people when they are deciding on their HE choices.

Refreshed Care Leaver Covenant launched

Our collaborative Care Leaver Covenant has been updated for 2022-23 with a number of new features.

The document now includes a glossary of HE terms, a care leaver story, and additional check boxes for the support offered to care-experienced young people by our 13 members.

We will be launching the invaluable resource with a social media campaign that will run throughout National Care Leavers' Week (24-28 October).

The importance of Open Days

With the application process for UCAS well underway, there is likely to be much to do for many young people.

For those who have yet to decide on where to apply, Open Days are an excellent way to view a campus and choose between the huge variety of options available.

Many HE providers can help with transport costs for care-experienced young people to attend in-person Open Days, while virtual tours are also availale at many institutions.

Research study into care experience and higher education choices

A doctoral researcher at King’s College London is looking for care-experienced undergraduate students to take part in an online survey about experiences of decision-making and making choices about HE.

The survey is anonymous, and participants can opt into a prize draw for a £25 Amazon voucher.

Please circulate details of the survey to any relevant individuals within your network.

Webinar addresses UCAS care-leaver tick box

Dominic House, our Care to Go Higher Delivery Officer, reflects on a Fostering Network webinar he recently attended that advised foster carers on the importance of ticking the box to self-identify as a care leaver.

Speakers at the event repeatedly offered reassurance that ticking the box is only ever used to identify those needing support. Other topics covered at the event included a clarification on who is considered to be a care leaver and the importance of dedicated care-leaver contacts
