Cllr Phil King

Leader of Harborough District Council

Exciting events planned in the Harborough district

The last few months have been busy with the highly successful job fairs in both Lutterworth and Market Harborough which saw a large number of on-the-spot employment offers for job seekers who attended these events.

So, if you're looking for a new job or you're returning back after a break, or you just want a change of direction, then why not get along to the monthly job club which is held on the first Friday of each month at the Wycliffe Rooms in Lutterworth.

Many of you will also have enjoyed the recent Great Big Green Week with its range of events focussed on sustainability and climate action. These included bike clinics, a green business workshop, plus stalls and events in Market Harborough town centre and at the Eco Village and activities in many other localities across the district. All helping our district be greener and cleaner.

Now as we look forward, the festive season is drawing closer. There will be plenty of fun events happening to get us into the Christmas spirit.

It will be fantastic that this year we can come together as a community to celebrate these festive times.

I encourage us all to continue to support our Harborough district businesses by shopping locally in the lead up to Christmas. This will help our local economy and support employment opportunities within our community.

Fortunately we have a diverse range of businesses, including eateries, adventure activities and services across our district, so there is plenty of choice for gifts, vouchers and treats.

I hope to see lots of you at these exciting events across the district.

Cllr Phil King

Cost of living help available online

We understand residents may be concerned about the rising cost of living so we have put together some information, and useful links to a range of different agencies, which may be able to help those needing further support.

Help with cost of living and details of support for residents across Leicestershire are available on the Leicestershire County Council's dedicated page.

Our website has links to organisations and government schemes which offer advice, support and urgent assistance to residents of the Harborough district.

Countdown to festive season begins with call to 'support local traders'

As we turn our minds to Christmas shopping please consider buying in Harborough district to support our wonderful local businesses.

A recent Government study has shown that for every £10 spent locally, £3.85 is recirculated within the local community, which promotes national recovery across the entire UK.

By shopping locally, we travel less distance and may choose walk or cycle to the shops which reduces our emissions and supports a healthier environment.
We can also be mindful to avoid one-use plastic as we all continue the fight against climate change.

A voucher for a product or service from our local independents can make a huge difference to small businesses and independents and help to keep our local community and high streets thriving.

New museum opens celebrating town's fascinating past and present

Lutterworth’s brand new museum has officially opened its doors to the public with the aim of bringing to life the last 2,000 years that have made Lutterworth what it is today.

Lutterworth and District Museum has moved from its old premises in Gilmorton Road to its new base at Lutterworth Town Estates’ £1million High Point building, so-called as it’s the highest point in the town, near to The Shambles pub.

Trustees said the intention is to be able to show the origins of the town, through static and interactive exhibits, with informative video and audio presentations which explain the journey through history.

As well as fascinating artifacts, photographs and memorabilia, there are displays about John Wycliffe, jet engine pioneer Sir Frank Whittle, and a Rolls Royce Merlin Engine.

Special artwork, (pictured) created by the ‘Artsy Twins’, has also gone on display at the museum to celebrate the launch.

Complete our survey on solid fuel burning with a chance to win prizes

A project to monitor tiny particles that are released into the air through the burning of solid fuel – like wood, coal or other materials – has begun and we’re asking you to help by completing a survey.

The project advises how people can help to reduce particulates in the air through three simple steps:

  • Change the appliance - moving to a modern wood burner to cut down particulates by 90%
  • Use a ‘cleaner’ fuel - burning seasoned, rather than unseasoned wood reduces particulates
  • Maintain your system - sweep the chimney once a year

A survey has been launched to discover people’s habits and knowledge around burning solid fuel.

Participants have a chance to be entered into a prize if they complete the survey by 30 November 2022.

The survey can be found at www.harborough.gov.uk/airquality
