Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we are now in the Spring term, we wanted to update you on some Exeter College information that may be relevant for you and your young person, and their college options for next academic year.

Exceptional Exeter College once again awarded
“Outstanding” by Ofsted

Exeter College is celebrating after a full Ofsted Inspection, which has resulted in the College retaining the impressive accolade of Outstanding.

Eight years since its last inspection Ofsted again confirmed that Exeter College is an Outstanding College. The College also scored the top assessment of ‘strong’ for its approach to meeting the skills needs of the area. This makes Exeter College the first college in the country to achieve the highest judgement in both elements of Ofsted’s new enhanced inspections.

The College achieved the top Ofsted rating of Outstanding in all four cross-college judgements; Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development and Leadership and Management. The College’s Sixth Form provision, adult learning and apprenticeships were also rated as Outstanding. The Outstanding grade for apprenticeships is extremely hard to achieve, with very few colleges nationally having achieved this.

The report praises the standard of teaching and learning across the College as well as the standards of behaviour and culture, citing that teachers and other staff are excellent role models who work tirelessly to meet the needs of learners.

Applications

Many learners have now completed their Exeter College applications and will be preparing for their interviews. For any learners who haven’t yet completed their application, this is a handy guide on how to set up an account and complete the online application form:

Exeter College - How to apply for 2023

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about this process, or if you require a paper form. Although we don’t have a fixed deadline, we recommend learners apply as soon as possible in the academic year, in order to increase the likelihood of securing an interview before the end of the school year. This would ideally be by the end of February.

Some learners may also choose to apply for one of the Exeter College Academies, so we would also encourage them to check our website for the application procedure and deadline for their chosen Academy.

Interviews

Interviews take place at Exeter College on a monthly basis until early July, and all interviews will take place out of school time. Shortly after we receive a learner’s application, we will schedule an interview date and time. This information is likely to be sent by email (very occasionally by letter) so please encourage applying students to check their email accounts, including the junk folder, regularly.

If we require additional information, an application may be placed on hold prior to an interview being offered. Some reasons for this hold may be if a learner has indicated they have an EHCP, support worker, are not a British passport holder, or if we are missing any key information from the application form. If a student’s application is placed on hold, we will inform the learner and Next of Kin by email of the reason for this delay, as well as providing details of what further information we require.

Please encourage your young person to attend their interview which will be with a subject lecturer from the course or one of the subjects they have chosen. If they cannot make their scheduled appointment, please let us know and we will re-schedule to the next available date. The admissions department can be contacted on 01392 400444 or by emailing: myinterview@exe-coll.ac.uk.

If a learner wishes to change their course after their interview, they can log back into their online application, change their course selection and re-submit their application, or they can contact the admissions team directly. A learner may need a second interview if they make a major change to their study programme, but the admissions team will advise them of this once they receive the amended application.

Enrolment

When the young person leaves the interview, they are likely to have been given a conditional offer of study, and this place will be subject to them achieving the grades detailed on their college offer form. Once they have received this offer, we encourage young people to focus on their revision and GCSE preparation. They will visit the college again in person for their enrolment appointment which will take place during the period after GCSE results day and before the start of term. This is an essential appointment to confirm a learner’s place on their course(s), as well as an opportunity to discuss alternative course options if required. For this reason, it is essential that learners are available to visit the college between the end of August and start of September 2023.

Open Events

Hopefully your young person will have had the opportunity to visit Exeter College at an Open Event last term. If they haven’t yet seen the College facilities, the last Open Event of the year will be taking place on the 26th April 2023 from 4-7pm. All the city centre sites will be open, along with the Construction Centre at Sowton and the Technology Centre at Monkerton.

Learners can register to attend the event on our website - Open Events (exe-coll.ac.uk).

Apprenticeships

Some learners may be interested in starting an apprenticeship after their GCSEs. Exeter College has a team of Training and Recruitment Advisers who can support young people who are interested in Apprenticeships. The advisers can provide advice and guidance on job searching, job applications, creating a CV, interview skills, and more. The team can be contacted on 01392 400800 or by emailing apprentices@exe-coll.ac.uk.

All Exeter College Apprenticeship vacancies will be advertised on our website, but some learners may also have an employer in mind already, and the Training and Recruitment Advisers can help both the student and employer to arrange this Apprenticeship. If your young person would like to find out more about Apprenticeships, they can also book onto one of the sessions that will be running at the college in the holidays or after school. Please visit our website for more information about Apprenticeships, to view our vacancies, or book an appointment with a Training and Recruitment Adviser  - Apprenticeships (exe-coll.ac.uk).
