Time to rejoice and reflect |
The countdown to Christmas is now underway, and we've had some fantastic festive events already across the district; it was great to see families enjoying these occasions, and supporting local traders.
We're asking that people 'shop local' this year when Christmas shopping, and think about the environment when they do so. It has never been a more important time to think about living more sustainably in everything we do, and reducing the amount of single-use plastic in what we buy.
It's been another busy and challenging year, and I would like to thank everyone who has provided support to the Council and across communities over the past 12 months. It is important that we recognise those who've made a positive difference.
Going forward, there is a lot to look forward to in 2022 and I will keep people posted through this newsletter.
To round off the year, we are asking you to tell us what we can do to improve the district and create more opportunities for you and your family. I wholeheartedly encourage everyone, whatever their age, to take part in this; your views will be listened to and could make a big difference to our future discussions, priorities and policies.
Finally, on behalf of the Council, I'd like to wish everyone in the Harborough district a merry and safe Christmas.

Toys for disadvantaged children can once again be dropped off at Harborough Market for this year's Toys on the Table appeal. Local radio station HFM is asking listeners to drop off their new toys at the indoor market' General Hall in Northampton Road, Market Harborough, which will serve as a collection point for the appeal. Toys for babies to children, aged up to 16, can be donated and must be new and unwrapped. For older children, it can also be a gift – eg. new books, clothing, gloves, hats, toiletries, etc – for girls and boys. Toys on the Table is a charity working in Leicestershire which has enabled thousands of disadvantaged children to receive gifts during the festive period. Take a few minutes to share views and help create better district for all |

Grab yourself a cuppa, and take a few minutes to fill in our new survey on a range of topics with the aim of improving facilities and wellbeing and creating opportunities for Harborough district. The questionnaire asks you to rank how you feel about certain issues and what you regard as most important areas to review, including community safety, job opportunities, wellbeing and more. You can use free text boxes to comment or make suggestions. Feedback will help us identify what is most important to residents and allow the Council to focus its priorities over the next few years. To ensure a diverse response from all people of ages and from across areas of Harborough district, the survey will be shared online, and shared directly with youth and community groups, rural parishes and disability groups. Shop local and sustainably this Christmas and think about environment |

In the run up to Christmas, we're calling on everyone to shop local and shop sustainably in the Harborough district.
Listen out for our radio advert encouraging people to use independent shops and traders close to you and make a real difference to the local economy.
We're also asking shoppers to think about packaging, recycling and the environment when picking up gifts for Christmas. Think about whether Christmas cards, wrapping paper, sticky tape, etc can be recycled after use, and try to buy locally-sourced food, and, if possible, avoid single-use plastic to help make the district, and planet, cleaner and greener.

Residents answer call to help shape town's future planning aspirations |

We've had a fantastic response to our calls for people to help shape future development in the town and join a neighbourhood plan forum for Market Harborough. More than 30 people took part in our recent webinar to discuss the proposals to create a neighbourhood plan for the town - but we need more! Neighbourhood planning is a way for communities to help decide the future of the places where they live and work. Communities can use a neighbourhood plan to choose where they want new homes, shops and offices to be built, have their say on what those new buildings should look like, and grant planning permission for the new buildings they want to see go ahead. Although, a neighbourhood plan cannot prevent otherwise sustainable or appropriate development. Boxing clever when it comes to staying safe and preventing theft |

We've been busy in Lutterworth delivering boxes to help people feel safer on the streets, and prevent theft.
As part of the Safer Streets initiative, we have been handing out boxes of personal alarms, purse bells, and other crime prevention items to businesses and charities in Lutterworth and to parish councils.
Shoppers can then pick them up for free, or by making a voluntary donation to the street pastors who provide physical and emotional support to people, if needed, in town centres at night.
The Home Office funded scheme is being implemented by the Leicestershire Police and Crime Commissioner's office, with support from the Council and 24-7 Locks Ltd. It has been offering free security measures for homes in Lutterworth town centre.
Work is also ongoing to install five new CCTV cameras in Lutterworth over the coming months.

More police officers pounding the beat - and tackling crime in rural area |

There are more Police officers in your neighbourhoods working towards your priorities.
Since March 2020 Leicestershire Police have worked under a new model of sending more resources to neighbourhoods for management under a local policing commander.
This area includes Harborough District and Oadby and Wigston Borough and the beat teams are supported by Neighbourhood Patrol Officers (response), local CID and a proactive team.

| There is also a Rural Crime team which covers Leicestershire and Rutland. Their task is to increase training in the force to provide a better response to rural crime. They link in with partners and rural communities to increase communication, attempt to provide a better service to those communities and to raise awareness of crime and crime prevention methods. | | |
